Mahabubnagar is the largest district in Telengana region and is among the top three larger districts in Andhra Pradesh in terms of the spread, with geographical area of 18,432 sq km and with population of 35 lakhs (3.51 million).The district is predominantly rural, with villages housing a population of 3.1 million. District is bounded on the North by Ranga Reddy and Nalgonda districts, on the East by Guntur and Nalgonda Districts, on the south by rivers Krishna and Tungabhadra and on the West by Raichur and Gulbarga Districts of Karnataka State.The entire district is covered under Krishna River Basin. The river Krishna with it's tributaries Bheema and Tungabhadra enters in to Andhra Pradesh in Mahabubnagar district.

The Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers traverse 250 km through the district. The district is known for being one of the main "feeding areas" of human labour in the country. From the controversial Narmada in Gujarat to Alamatti in Karnataka, no project is complete without their sweat and toil. Of the 35 lakh population in the district, it is estimated that an overwhelming six to seven lakh people fan out to far corners of the country. And the numbers keep growing every year, with the rising intensity of drought. The district produced stalwarts like Sri. Burgula Ramakrishna Rao first Chief Minister of Hyderabad state, and the former Governor; Sri. Suravaram Pratap Reddy freedom-fighter and editor of the popular Telugu daily, Golconda Patrika; Sri. Raja Bahaddur Venkatarama Reddy The district is well known for artistic silk sarees of Gadwal, Narayanpet, and Kothakota which are noted for their silk ands Zari sarees and having command on the good market through out the country. The economy of the district is predominantly on agriculture. Mahbubnagar has a total of 1,544 revenue villages organised in 64 revenue Mandals administered by four Revenue divisions located at Narayanpet, Mahbubnagar, Gadwal and Nagarkurnool. At the time of the state re-organisation in 1956, Pargi Taluk was transferred to Hyderabad; Alampur and Gadwal of Raichur district and Kodangal taluk of Gulbarga district was transferred to Mahbubnagar. In terms of electoral representation, this district consists of thirteen assembly constituencies and two parliamentary constituencies.
